Match Report

Oldham Athletic fell to a 2-0 defeat at the Macron Stadium against Bolton Wanderers.

Zach Clough scored a goal in either half to secure the points for Phil Parkinson’s men.

His first came from a set piece in the opening 10 minutes before Latics dominated possession and created plenty of chances.

However, the striker netted his second of the game on 77 minutes to seal the game for the Trotters as Latics could not find their third win in as many games.

Manager Stephen Robinson named an unchanged team for the third time as Ryan Flynn passed a late fitness test and was named on the left hand side of midfield.

It would be Bolton Wanderers who had the first shot of the game through Sammy Ameobi. The winger received the ball on the edge of the box but curled way over Connor Ripley’s goal.

The home side won a free kick in the 10th minute 20 yards from goal after Gary Madine was fouled by Paul Green.

Clough stepped up and curled the ball up and over the wall giving Ripley no chance to give Bolton Wanderers the lead.

The home side continued to dominate the possession and Ripley was forced into a smart save from David Wheater. The central defender rose highest from a corner but Ripley palmed his effort wide.

Athletic needed to regroup and they did quickly and started to take control of the first half.

Midway through the half, Carl Winchester took on his man and curled with his left foot towards the far corner but it went inches over the crossbar.

Five minutes later, the midfielder again tries his luck from the edge of the box but this time it was blocked in the penalty area.

Latics continued to put pressure on the Trotters goal and striker Lee Erwin had two chances to level the score.

Firstly the striker shot wide from the edge of the box whilst two minutes later, he was presented with a lot of space 25 yards from goal and with Winchester overlapping, he elected to shoot but it was deflected inches wide of the goal.

It was an open game and seconds after that chance, Bolton Wanderers would have extended their lead had it not been for the form of Ripley.

Ameobi raced through one-on-one with the goalkeeper but Ripley saved with his legs instinctively.

The manager kept his players in the dressing room a little longer at half time and his words clearly had an effect.

Flynn turned his man on the right, put the ball across the face of the goal but it was just ahead of the onrushing Billy Mckay.

Athletic were keeping the ball comfortably and could have levelled through Winchester on 52 minutes.

Flynn’s cross found Mckay who chested it into the path of Winchester and his volley went inches over the crossbar.

Freddie Ladapo was brought on in place of Mckay on the hour mark whilst a minute later Winchester struck wide from 20 yards.

Madine tested the palms of Ripley on 65 minutes and three minutes later came Latics’ best chance of the second half.

Flynn found Paul Green in acres of space in the box, he attempted to chip the ball over the goalkeeper but he saved, Ladapo followed up but Mark Howard again made the save to frustrate Latics.

As Latics had a strong foothold in the game, they were hit with a sucker punch as Bolton extended their lead on 77 minutes.

After Winchester cleared the ball off the line, the ball continued to bobble around the penalty area and from six yards, Clough netted in off the crossbar to win the game for the Trotters.

Calaum Jahraldo-Martin came on for his first league appearance of the season, replacing Ousmane Fane, whilst Cameron Dummigan was also introduced in place of Brian Wilson.

Athletic continued to attempt to get something out of the game as Green and Jamie Reckord went close late on but it was Bolton Wanderers who came away with the three points.
