Latics 2-3 Wealdstone

20 April 2024

Oldham’s season ended in defeat at Boundary Park.

Latics initially took the lead through Mike Fondop’s header, but were soon pegged back and then overtaken by Jack Young and a Shaun Hobson own goal.

Mikey levelled the score for Latics with his smart finish, before Mason Barrett gave the Stones the lead with 15 minutes to go.

Oldham had an early chance through Devarn Green, but his long-range strike went wide of the away side’s goal.

He couldn’t score the opener, but he did assist it - Devarn’s cross found Fondop, who headed home from close-range to put Latics ahead.

The away side had a few half chances for the rest of the half, but overall, the first 45 was relatively quiet, and Oldham went into the break ahead.

Moving into the second-half though, Athletic’s lead didn’t last, Kallum Cesay did brilliantly to keep the ball in play, sticking out his leg to fire a cross in which was met by Young in the box.

His looping cross beat Mat Hudson, hitting the underside of the crossbar, then the post, before bouncing into the goal, to equalise the game.

It went from bad to worse for Oldham just a handful of moments later when the visitors grabbed a second.

A clever one-two between Da Silva and Bowen allowed the latter to get a powerful but inaccurate shot off on goal.

Unfortunately for Oldham, it was that power which allowed the ball to take a slight nick off Hobson’s boot, sending it into the goal.

A regrettable goal to concede for Latics, but it didn’t stop them finding an equaliser three minutes later.

Fondop picked up the ball on the left wing, beat his man and darted into the box; seeing an opening, he fired into the roof of the net with his left foot, despite the efforts of the away team’s defence and goalkeeper.

Mikey went looking for a hat-trick, seeing a curled shot go just wide of the goal, but it would be Sam Cox’s side who found a third.

A quick corner routine saw a ball swung in towards the six yard box, which Barrett headed home.
