Youngster Connor Hughes is close to establishing a starting spot for Latics according to Paul Dickov.
Latics' manager has been impressed with the teenager's early-season form.
Dickov said of the 19-year-old Hughes: "Connor is close to getting a starting spot because he has done well.
"What we have to be careful with Connor is that there is a big difference between coming on in games and making an impact and starting games at this level.
"As a staff, we have spoken about giving Connor more game time this year. We have to be careful not to give him too much too soon which could harm him."
Hughes was handed his debut at Rochdale in March and now has made six first-team appearances, all as a substitute.
