Manager praises backroom team

Johnson thanks staff

Lee Johnson has praised his backroom staff pointing out it has been a team effort to stave off the threat of relegation.

Latics' manager (pictured) says he is indebted to the help he has received from the likes of Tony Philliskirk and Paul Gerrard along with senior players Cliff Byrne and Chris Iwelumo.

And Johnson believes Byrne and Iwelumo have shown the qualities needed to become managers in their own right.

Johnson said: "I haven't played Chris as much as I would like, but he has been a positive person around the place helping the young players.

"I know one day he will be a fantastic manager and I am sure than will be sooner rather than later.

"Cliff has been a leader in the dressing room and he has taken to being another coach.

"He is another destined for a career in coaching/management."

Johnson also praised Philliskirk saying he has provided guidance because of his knowledge of the workings within in the club and also Gerrard for his contribution.

He said: "I have really enjoyed working with everyone. The best thing for me arriving at the club is the way all these personalities have blended.

"It could have been a situation when you come in and people are stabbing each other in the back.

"That hasn't happened and that is testamount to them as men and people."
