Winchester re-signs for Latics

2 July 2013

Contract extension for Carl

Carl Winchester has signed a contract extension for Latics and will be remaining at Boundary Park for the 2013/14 season.

And manager Lee Johnson is looking for big things from the 20-year-old who has already won one full cap for Northern Ireland.

Though Winchester favours playing in midfield, Johnson believes he has the potential to be a top class right back.

Johnson is also looking to play Winchester more as he has only made 22 starts and nine substitute appearances since making his first-team debut in November 2010.

He said: "I am really pleased that Carl has signed his contract extension and is staying.

"I felt bad for Carl last season because he didn't have enough game time when you consider how well he trained and played in reserve-team games.

"I know Carl wants to play in midfield, but I want to have a look at him at right back because I think he has the potential to be a top class right back."
