Baxter spot on for Latics

Latics produced a bright display in the opening half of their first pre-season friendly against top Romanian side Dinamo Bucharest at Leigh Sports Village.

Jose Baxter (pictured) gave Latics the lead from the penalty spot, but Rus Laurentiu equalised for Dinamo to make it 1-1 at the break.

Latics made a lively start and would have taken an eighth-minute lead but for a fine save low at his near post by keeper Cristian Balgradean to keep out a shot by Jonson Clarke-Harris.

Dinamo went close five minutes later when a header from central-defender Antonio Asanovic flashed just wide.

Latics went ahead in the 19th minute after Clarke-Harris was tripped by Balgradean as he burst clean through on goal.

Referee Mark Halsey pointed to the spot and Baxter scored from the spot with a cheeky chip down the middle of the goal as Balgradean dived low to his right.

Dinamo equalised just short of the half hour when Latics' defence failed to clear danger and Laurentiu rifled in a shot from the edge of the box low to the right of keeper Robbie Thompson.

Half-time: Dinamo Bucharest 1, Latics 1.
