Latics are comeback kings

Latics produced a stirring second-half comeback to beat Macclesfield Town 4-1 in their pre-season friendly at Boundary Park.

Two goals from Cristian Montano (pictured), an Adam Rooney penalty and own goal saw Latics overturn a first-half deficit in style.

Latics, 1-0 down at the break, made two changes for the restart as James Wesolowski and James Dayton were replaced by Anton Rodgers and Sidney Schmeltz.

The equaliser came in the 49th minute through a penalty from Rooney.

There was a misunderstanding in defence as Steve Williams tried to usher a back pass to keeper Rhys Taylor.

Jonson Clarke-Harris burst through only to be brought down by Taylor enabling Rooney to confidently score from the spot.

And Latics were ahead in the 52nd minute following a brilliantly-worked move.

Clarke-Harris played a delightful pass to Montano whose first-time shot from the edge of the box flew in off the upright.

Latics were indebted to keeper Mark Oxley for staying ahead as he pulled off a great save to beat out a fierce drive from Arthur Gnahoua.

Jose Baxter made his entrance after an hour as he replaced the impressive Clarke-Harris.

Latics quickly added a third goal when Montano cut in from the left and found the net with a low shot under keeper Taylor.

And there would have been a fourth goal when Rooney's goalbound effort was blocked by Steve Williams.

Latics made another change midway through the half when Charlie MacDonald came on for Rooney in a straight swop up front and with 17 minutes left Cliff Byrne came on for David Mellor at centre back. He was soon followed by Glenn Belezika replacing James Tarkowski.

Baxter had a chance late on to add a fourth goal, but his well-hit shot was beaten away by Taylor.

And Baxter was the key figure in Latics' fourth goal which came on the stroke of full time.

Baxter's free kick struck the crossbar and flew into the net off the back of keeper Taylor.

No doubt Baxter will claim the goal while Taylor will be keen that it is not debited to him.

Full-time: Latics 4, Macclesfield Town 1.
