Baxter on target for Latics

Jose Baxter struck an equaliser for Latics late in the opening half of their pre-season friendly at Accrington Stanley.

It cancelled a strike from Luke Clark which had given the hosts an early lead.

Latics fell behind in the 11th minute after Clark found the net with a fiercely struck free kick from the edge of the box low to the left of keeper Mark Oxley.

The free kick was conceded by James Tarkowski who fouled Piero Mingoia as he burst through on goal.

Latics soon had a chance to equalise when keeper Ian Dunbavin did well to keep out a shot from Cristian Montano.

Dunbavin was called into action again to keep out a low, angled drive from James Wesolowski as Latics continued to press for an equaliser.

Baxter (pictured) then forced a stretching save from Dunbavin with a shot from 30 yards.

Tarkowski made another of his increasingly familiar bursts from defence and, from his cross, Adam Rooney failed to hit the target with a diving header.

It was no surprise when the equaliser came in the 41st minute when Montano's right-wing cross was flicked on by Tarkowski and Baxter struck a shot into the ground from the edge of the box and it looped over Dunbavin into the net.

Half-time: Accrington Stanley 1, Latics 1.
