Friendly defeat for Latics

25 July 2013

Clarets' whirlwind opening

Latics lost 5-0 at Burnley in a behind-closed doors game at the Clarets' Gawthorpe training ground.

They paid the penalty for a dreadful start as they found themselves 5-0 down after only 35 minutes.

Manager Lee Johnson (pictured), however, described it as a worthwhile exercise.

He said: "Burnley had a strong side while we had a young one.

"We showed for 35 minutes we cannot compete against a good Championship team.

"It was very good for our young players as they experienced the standard of being a player at a Championship club."

Johnson added that a couple of players stepped up to the plate with very good performances.

"There were several who put themselves into my mind, but seven or eight gave poor performances and have knocked themselves down a peg," he explained.
