Red-hot Montano double seals victory

Cristian Montano's red-hot scoring streak helped Latics defeat Huddersfield Town 3-2 at Boundary Park in their final pre-season workpout.

The winger (pictured) scored twice in the second half to take his total in pre-season matches to four goals.

Latics, 1-0 ahead at the break through a Jose Baxter goal, had an early chance to double their advantage when a header from James Tarkowski drifted narrowly wide.

Huddersfield, who had made two substitutions at half time, made two further changes early in the second half as manager Mark Robins looked for a way back into the match.

Latics made their first change in the 62nd minute when Jonson Clarke-Harris came on for Charlie MacDonald.

Huddersfield's equaliser came two minutes later when substitute Cristian Lopez rose at the far post to head home a right-wing cross from Adam Clayton.

And the Terriers went ahead in the 67th minute.

This time right-back JHack Hunt supplied the cross from the right and substitute Martin Patterson slid in at the far post to score from inside the six-yard box.

Latics made a second switch when Cliff Byrne came on for David Mellor.

Montano made it 2-2 in the 71st minute with a spectacular equaliser.

Baxter's free kick took a deflection off the defensive wall and was cleared only as far as Montano on the far edge of the box as he hooked in a terrific shot high into the top corner of the net.

And it got even better for Latics who regained the lead in the 76th minute.

Clarke-Harris released Montano who raced clear through the centre to slot home his second goal of the game.

This was followed by a double substitution as Rooney and James Dayton were replaced by Kirk Millar and Sidney Schmeltz

Oxley pulled off two saves late in the game to each time deny Danny Ward, the second was a tremendous flying stop.

Latics made a further change with six minutes left when Danny Gosset replaced Baxter.

Full-time: Latics 3, Huddersfield Town 2.
