Steele is taking part in an aquathlon which launches the five-day event at London's Hyde Park which hosted last summer's Olympics triathlon.
Competing in the 40/44 years age group, Steele will be undertaking a 1,000 metre swim followed by a five kilometre run.
Steele had hoped to compete in the triathlon for Team GB but narrowly failed to qualify.
He said: "The competition for places this year was more intense than ever because it was being held on course which was used for last summer's Olympics.
"The top seven finishers from the trials made the Great Britain team. I was two minutes behind second place, but finished 21st.
"Though I didn't make the team, I was invited to take part in the aquathlon."
This is not the first time Steele has represented Great Britain.
Last year he competed for them in the World Triathlon Championships in New Zealand where he finished in the thirties in the 35/39 age category.
Steele's introduction to the sport came when he took part in the inaugural Liverpool triathlon.
"My mates were taking part and I bet I could beat them. They all pulled out and I ended up doing it on my own," he explained.
Steele was bitten, though he says it has been a challenge.
He continued: "As a footballer and a striker, my training was based on speed.
"To go and train for an endurance event has been doubly difficult."
Steele takes part in sprint triathlons (750m swim, 20k bike ride and 5k run) and also the Olympic one (1,500m swim, 40k bike ride and 10k run).
He says before he joined Latics he was effectively a full-time athlete. However, due to the demands of his job at Boundary Park his training has been disrupted.
"I am not in the best shape, but I am a competitive person and will be bidding to do myself justice," he concluded.
Steele may return to London on Sunday to see the showcase men's open triathlon which will feature the Brownlee brothers - Alastair struck gold and Jonny picked up bronze in last summer's Olympics.
