Striker upbeat after cup display

Adam Rooney believes Latics should take great confidence and belief from the way they matched Wolves in yesterday's first-round tie in the FA Cup with Budweiser.

Latics' striker (pictured) said: "It was a very good performance against Wolves who are a very good side and are towards the top of the table for a reason.

"Just look at the fact they brought Kevin Doyle and Leigh Griffiths, two full internationals, off the bench against us to see their strength in depth they have.

"They still have players who were with them in the Premier League and the wages some of them are on and the club's budget is mind blowing.

"Yet we outplayed them in parts of the game and were disappointed not to already be in the next round.

"We have to take the belief that we can play the way we did today into the replay and go there and get a win."

Rooney also believes yesterday's performance put them in good spirits for Tuesday's Northern Area Quarter Final in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Notts County and next Saturday's home game against MK Dons.

He continued: "If we show the same attitude and desire we showed against Wolves in the next two games, I am sure we will get through to the next round of the JPT and pick up three points on Saturday.

"We have to make sure we also take it into against other teams and not simply against top sides like Wolves."

Rooney added it was strange playing against Wolves' centre-half Richard Stearman explaining the last time he played against him he was a Premier League player.

On that occasion Birmingham City, for whom Rooney played, won at Molineux in the FA Cup.
