I am desperate to take my team to Anfield - Lee Johnson

Lee Johnson relishes the prospect of taking his Latics' side to Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup with Budweiser providing they can overcome Mansfield in their second-round replay.

Latics' manager admits there is still work to do, though, if they are to play at Anfield next month.

Johnson said: "Obviously we are all excited, but we have to calm down because we have another tie to play before we can think of Liverpool.

"And we will have to play a lot better than we did on Saturday if we are to reach the third round.

"Mansfield away will be a difficult game. If we give a good performance, though, we will have a good chance of progressing.

"I am sure all the players want the experience, myself included, as I am desperate to take my team to Anfield."

It would be the third successive season in which Latics have played Liverpool in the FA Cup.

And Johnson added he hoped the game will be screened live on television to enhance the club's reputation.

He also explained it would be a brilliant tie for Anton Rodgers whose father Brendan is the Liverpool manager.

Johnson said: "It would be great for Anton if we get to that point.

"He will be desperate to do well in the build up to that game as he will want to play against his dad.

"And it would also be useful to have a spy in the camp!"
