Win for Latics Ladies

10 December 2013

Avro's are grounded

Oldham Athletic Ladies recorded a comfortable 4-1 victory at Avro’s in Division Two of the Greater Manchester Women’s  Football League.

Latics were not at full strength missing Courtney Williams, after her injury last week, Nicole Brien and Anette Falch who were not available.

Top scorer Shelby Newton was again influential, especially in the first half.

Newton's shot from out wide after 11 minutes deceived Avro’s keeper Kirsty Philips who could only parry the shot to the feet of Alys Wild who tapped home to give Latics the lead.

Newton struck again after half an hour from a similar position, but this time the keeper's parry went into the net to make it 2-0.

Avro’s defence barely had time to draw breath when Harriett Busby ran clear and rifled a shot home for Latics' third.

Wild bagged her second of the game and Latics' fourth first-half goal when they breached the offside trap.

Avro’s reorganised at the break and it worked as Latics struggled to get a sight of goal in the second half.

Avro’s started the half well when Lees beat keeper Kim Shaw through a crowded goalmouth to reduce the deficit to 4-1.

As the wintery afternoon gloom descended, the game became scrappy, though Latics were never threatened as they had a commanding lead.

Latics: Shaw, Green, Hyde, Kayupa, Chrissaki, Busby, Deane, Newton, Barber, Wild A, Wild D. Subs: Smith, Dinsdale, Turner

* Latics Ladies begin their cup campaign on Sunday when the travel to Uppermill in the first round of the Open Age Challenge Cup. The game is at Uppermill Sports Club (OL3 6HF), kick off 2pm.
