Defender Leaves Club

17 January 2014

Byrne moves on

Defender Cliff Byrne, who joined Latics in July 2012, has today left the club by 'mutual agreement'. Having joined Latics from Scunthorpe United, Byrne went on to make 41 league and cup appearances before spending a three month loan spell back with the Iron prior to Christmas. The defender has agreed a deal with the club that sees him leave Boundary Park.

Latics gaffer Lee Johnson said earlier: "Cliff has been exemplary during his time here as a player, and it shouldn't go unnoticed how he helped me by doing an excellent job, when I first joined the club, during our fight for survival. Everyone at Oldham Athletic FC wishes Cliff well in his playing career and what will undoubtedly be a future coaching career"

Byrne added: "I have really enjoyed my time at Boundary Park it's been terrific from the day I came in. I would like to thank the fans for their support, they have always been really good to me, and I hope they appreciated my commitment to them. I think the team isn't far away from shooting up the table, there is a lot of quality in the dressing room, and I wish them every success going forward"
