Wigan Youth 5-5 Latics Youth

7 April 2014

A remarkable comeback for the young Latics was unfortunately only rewarded with a draw, leaving them seven points behind leaders Blackpool.

Kyle Hardman scored in the first half as Latics went into the break 4-1 behind. The half time break kicked the youngsters into life and goals from Jack Tuohy, Will Kinder and a double from Danny Byrnes sealed a draw in what was an entertaining encounter.

After Wigan raced into a two goal lead, it was Hardman that got Latics back into the game. The midfielder superbly volleyed past the goalkeeper mid way through the first half to Latics back into the game mid way through the first half.

With Oldham looking to come back into the game, they gifted Wigan another two goals sending Latics into half time 4-1 down.

The half time whistle allowed manager Tony Philliskirk a chance to reassess and make tactical changes to get the side back into the encounter.

Latics started the second half better and got a goal back through a bizarre goal from Jack Touhy. The forward's corner deceived the goalkeeper and went straight in to reduce the arrears.

Philliskirk shuffled his side again and one of the substitutes, Danny Byrnes, bought Latics within a goal of their opponents. The youngster, who recently returned from Wales duty, struck to make score 4-3.

Soon afterwards and all Oldham's hard work looked to have been undone as they conceded another goal, meaning Wigan regained a two goal advantage.

Latics didn't let that goal phase them and struck two quick goals to level the game up at 5-5. Byrnes got his second of the game and Will Kinder equalised with ten minutes remaining to put the visitors in the ascendancy.

With still ten minutes remaining, the visitors had plenty of chances to win the game but unfortunately couldn't get the winning goal.

Speaking about the game, manager Philliskirk said: "It was a crazy, crazy game. We defended poorly in the first half but valiantly in the second half. I have to give real credit to the lads to show huge grit and determination to get back into the game.

"In the end we were disappointed to come away with a draw. It signalled the end of a tough week as we told the boys who was getting offered contracts and who were not. That is the worst part of the job for me but I thought the lads did superbly and it shows how good our side has been this season as they had the character to come back."
