Lee Johnson Previews Colchester United

16 April 2014

After a weekend off, Latics boss Lee Johnson is gearing up to take his side to Essex to face Colchester United on Good Friday.

Due to Sheffield United's involvement in the FA Cup, Latics enjoyed a rare weekend off, which the manager had mixed emotions about.

He said: "I would have rather played but it has been good to have a period of time to get the injured players back.

"We gave them the weekend to relax and refresh and get ready for what is an important three weeks."

Latics dropped one place to 17th position in Sky Bet League One and currently sit four points above the relegation places but the manager admitted other results favoured his side.

"There have been some decent results for us over the last 11 days but it doesn't mean a lot at this stage.

"We know we've got to get a certain amount of points and we know we've got to get them quickly," continued the gaffer.

"The lads are going from a good place in their heads and there is decent confidence in there head."

Colchester is the destination for Latics on Good Friday and Johnson spoke of the threats they could pose his side.

"I saw Colchester play Stevenage last weekend. They are a good side and they have threats," commented the 32-year-old.

"On their day, the front four are very powerful, quick and lively. With their best 11 out, they are a match for anyone.

"We have to see whether we can explore the weaknesses on the day but we go there full of confidence."

With two games in 72 hours, the manager is mindful of the condition of his players with games in quick succession.

Johnson said: "We are in a good place squad wise but I know that can all change. We can't afford to have injuries to key players.

"A couple of players have been putting real pressure on me with the way they have been training recently.

"It's a nice pressure to have because I've got people knocking on my door telling me they are ready."
