Johnson: "It Was A Fair Result"

30 April 2014

Latics manager Lee Johnson believed yesterday's 1-1 draw with Sheffield United was a fair result.

Chris Porter cancelled out James Wilson's first half header but the result meant Latics extended their unbeaten record to nine games without defeat.

Speaking after the game, Johnson said: "It could have swung both ways but generally I thought it was two good teams who looked like they were playing with confidence.

"I think it was a good game. It was a tough game and Sheffield United are a good side. They have very good players and they are going to be a strong outfit next season.

"Hopefully that's a dress rehearsal for a game higher up the table next season."

Wilson, who signed for the club during the January transfer window, had never scored a professional goal before last night and the gaffer was delighted for his centre half.

"I was pleased for him asI was mocking him a couple of days ago," joked the 32-year-old.

"I asked if he'd ever scored in a league or reserve game and he hadn't so I was delighted for him. He did well tonight and he's done well since he came in."

Although both teams effectively had nothing to play for but pride, Johnson was pleased with the tempo of the game.

"Considering it was the penultimate game of the season and there wasn't much on it, I thought it was a great testament to both clubs in what was an exciting game for everyone," the boss said.
