Manager Lee Johnson believes he will have to bide his time in the transfer market to get the right players into the football club.
The gaffer, who celebrates his birthday today, has already added Joseph Mills to his ranks as he prepares his squad for the 2014/15 season.The 24-year-old is the first player to be signed this season but the manager admits that the longer the summer goes on, the easier it will be to pick up the right players.
He said: "Originally you get high wage demands from people you get in contact with but as time goes on, wives start panicking and people have spent too much money on holiday, so they want to know where they're going in on July 1 to start pre-season training.
"Price and wage demands start to then become a bit realistic but I'm pleased with the work going on behind the scenes and we're confident of getting the six or seven players required to take us to a different level."
The departure of Jonathan Grounds was quickly followed up by the signing of Mills and he is a player that has been on the manager's radar for some time.
"It was documented last season that I was keen to bring Mills back to the club but I was always keen to bring him back in permanently. I've been in touch with his agent and Burnley for about six months now," the boss added.
"I think the fact Burnley have gone into the Premier League has helped us sign him but I'm pleased with the signing and I expect him to only get better as well."
With a couple of clubs sniffing around Latics' players, the manager was keen to point out that he will not be bullied into selling his assets.
"In recent years Oldham have been seen as a selling club and we can't get away from that but that does mean that the lads and the staff at the club are doing something right," insisted Johnson.
"We have got a couple of decent sized clubs courting a couple of our players but they are our players on good contracts so if we do move them on, which we don't want to, it would have to be at the right price for us."
