Pitch Progress

16 June 2014

Head Groundsman Lee Williams is confident the pitch will be ready in preparation for the first pre-season clash with Newcastle United on Tuesday, July 15.

The surface was stripped three weeks ago as renovation work started on the pitch in preparation for the new season.

Williams, who took over the role from Chris Bailey, has reassured supporters that the surface will be ready in time for the first game.

He said: "It's going to take more time for the grass to grow and for it to fill out. It's where I want it after just three weeks. I'm starting to take a decent amount of grass off at the minute.

"We need to monitor the grass, keep cutting it and doing general maintenance to the pitch. We need to keep on top of it and help it come through."

Along with the Boundary Park pitch, Williams oversees the renovation of the training ground which also is making good progress.

"That is getting on alright in preparation for the first team getting back on July 1," added Williams. "Everyone forgets that we have the training ground to prepare along with Boundary Park but both are on track and will be ready in time."

With less than a month to go until pre-season kicks off, Williams has outlined what he hopes to happen in the next four weeks.

"Overall we are getting there. The weather has been on and off. Some days it has been cold and some days it has been warm. The more sun and warm weather we get then the better the pitch will be," he commented.
