Dream Debut For Forte

10 August 2014

Latics' summer signing Jonathan Forte made a dream debut, netting twice in Latics' 2-2 opening day draw with Colchester United.

The midfielder, signed on a free transfer from Southampton, only needed 18 minutes to open his Latics account for the season, scoring a magnificent individual goal.

Speaking about that goal, the forward admitted to getting a bit of fortune on the way but praised his teammates for his second.

He said: "I was a bit lucky to be fair. I went past one or two and I went to play Clarke-Harris in but it ricocheted straight into my path so I was happy with the goal.

"I was happy with the second goal. It was a good ball in from Brian Wilson and I thought I put it away well."

Although Forte scored the two goals, he was still disappointed not to come away from Essex with the victory.

"The first game of the season is always 100 miles an hour so you just want to weather the storm and I thought we did alright," the 28-year-old explained.

"Personally I thought we should have won the game but it wasn't to be. We were 2-1 up so we wanted to shore up defence and get the win but it wasn't to be. We have to take the positives out the game and go again."

Next up for Latics is the Capital One Cup fixture against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night and Forte is hoping supporters continue their fantastic support into the home fixtures.

"The fans will have wanted a win but it's an away game and we didn't lose so it's onwards and upwards. Hopefully we can make our home ground a fortress for Tuesday's game with Middlesbrough," Forte added.

"I don't think the Middlesbrough game will be any different. You've got to the get the information from the opposition team and hopefully we'll go out and give a good performance."
