Performance Pleases The Gaffer

20 August 2014

Gaffer Lee Johnson was delighted with the response of his players following the 1-1 draw with Port Vale.

James Wilson headed a second half equaliser after Tom Pope had opened the scoring early on for the Valiants.

With the manager asking for a response from his players following the defeat to Leyton Orient on Saturday, he believed his side performed admirably during last night's encounter.

He said: "I thought we started really bright and we've won the game today in my opinion but drawn on the scoreboard. I'm really pleased with the lads. It wasn't going to be easy as Port Vale have made a flying start to the season and our crowd turned on us a little bit but I was pleased with the character of the players.

"We bossed the game from start to finish in my opinion. I was disappointed not to get the three points but if we keep playing like that then we will shoot straight up the league."

Johnson felt there were many positives to take from the game including Wilson's goal and Amari Morgan-Smith's debut.

"We've got injuries coming back and I thought Amari looked lively when he came on and there is a lot of positives to take," the boss commented.

"It was good to get the goal from the set piece. I'm pleased for Wilson because he's 6"2 and sometimes he plays like he's 5"11 so he'll go home happy with that goal and I'm pleased for him."

Looking ahead to the game with Preston on Saturday, the 33-year-old is excited by his team and cannot wait to face the Lilywhites.

"I think sometimes we play better away and I'm looking forward to the game. Our back four looked a lot more solid today and we had to get a lot of work going on that in the last couple of days," said Johnson.

"There is a lot of games to go and people will write us off in the next couple of games but we know that we can go out and get results."
