Johnson: "What A Difference A Week Makes"

7 September 2014

After three wins, three clean sheets and the club into the top half of the division, manager Lee Johnson cannot praise his side's team spirit enough.

Jonathan Forte notched his fifth goal of the season, taking him joint top of Sky Bet League One's goalscoring chart.

The winger's penalty at the end of the first half sealed Latics the 1-0 victory over a high-flying Fleetwood Town side who suffered their first league defeat of the season.

The manager admitted last week it was a relief to get his first victory of the season and has seen his side kick on from that good result.

He said: "What a difference a week makes. Seven days ago, everyone was as low as a snakes belly but three wins later and everyone is riding high and I'm delighted.

"It was a really tough game again but I thought we had the chances to put it to bed. I'm pleased with the squad throughout. Dominic has come in and has been fantastic on his debut and unlucky not to score one or two.

"Tuesday was a tough game mentally and physically so to come out here and put in that performance shows we have great spirit. It was a tough game for everybody, including the fans.

"It was constant switching hands of possession and counter attacks from both teams. I thought certain memebers through the core of our team were excellent."

Johnson was in good spirits after the game and reserved huge praise for his midfield who he felt controlled the encounter.

"I thought Kelly and Jones were superb today. Fleetwood played a diamond and that can sometimes cause you problems but to compete like they did and be as tidy as they were, it helped us massively," the gaffer commented, before adding: "Kelly's ball over the top for the goal was sublime and both of them were neat in possession."

Carl Winchester, who was voted the club's August Player of the Month, jets off on international duty this week and the 33-year-old believes a good pre-season is the reason behind his good form.

"Carl has been superb this season. He's got himself going and we've also got him going. We always believed in him but his problem last season was his pre-season because he never got right physically.

"This summer we've had him on regime to bulk him up and get his fitness up to scratch. He's been Championship class at least since the start of the season," stated Johnson.

With Gillingham the visitors to SportsDirect.com Park next weekend, the manager is asking more of the same from everybody.

He said: "We've got to kick on now. Football can make you feel down again very quickly. Let's get this side ready for Gillingham and make sure we get this place pumping again."
