Gaffer Praises Players After Convincing Victory

22 October 2014

Latics boss Lee Johnson hailed his players after an emphatic 4-1 victory over Coventry City, extending their unbeaten run to 12 games.

Jonathan Forte's double inspired Latics to victory over Coventry City. Danny Philliskirk notched against his former club and Jabo Ibehre rounded off the scoring as Latics sealed an emphatic win against the Sky Blues.

The gaffer, who was in buoyant mood after the game, praised the contributions of central midfielder Liam Kelly and opening goalscorer Philliskirk.

He said: "They were both quality on the ball and I don't want to sound patronising but I wonder if the general punter sees the quality of Kelly. People are growing to him now and they are starting to see how he uses his shoulders, keeps the ball and tidies up. He allows other players to play and that's a sign of a good player.

"I thought Philliskirk's organisation was good as well as his quality on the ball which we know he has got. The work rate the player puts in is phenomenal."

Speaking about the overall performance of his players, Johnson felt they were good value for the comfortable win.

"I'm really pleased and it was a great performance from the whole squad. We made a couple of changes but the lads were ready and I thought the lads that came in were great." commented the manager.

We had some half decent chances so we are heading in the right direction. The result keeps us right in touch with the play off places. It was a great performance in difficult conditions so I couldn't be more happier as a manager.

Latics are now just a point away from the play off positions and the 33-year-old is taking it game by game as he pursues excellence.

"I don't see why we should get carried away. We just have to keep believing that we are in with a chance.

"All the big clubs are up there which makes it difficult as if they lose a few they can strengthen and make them better again but our squad is in decent shape and we can go into the game on Saturday full of energy," admitted Johnson.
