Captain Clarke Praised Character Of Players After Yesterday’s Draw

28 September 2016

Captain and goalscorer Peter Clarke praised the character of the players after yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic.

Athletic dominated the opening proceedings but fell behind on 22 minutes through a Josh Magennis strike.

However, Latics heads did not drop and they continued to pile the pressure on the Charlton goal and the equaliser finally came in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Clarke got on the end of a Paul Green cross and rescued a deserved point for Latics, and the defender was delighted to get on the scoresheet.

He said: “It was on my best foot (head) so I always had half a chance.

“I should have scored on Saturday in all honesty with the chance I had but it was nice to get on the end of the ball into the box and it was nice to come out with a point in the end, however, I do think we should have had all three.

"We started the game very well and we had a belief that we could come here and get something. The three points would have been fully justified but there is an inner belief that we can get good results.

“It was great to see the boys keep their heads held high after falling behind, play in the right manner and get a deserved point."

Stephen Robinson made six changes to his side ahead of the game and the captain admitted it was good to put Saturday’s defeat against Swindon Town behind them.

“We have put Saturday to bed now with tonight’s performance,” Clarke admitted.

“It was nice that this game came about so quickly given the poor performance and we need to make sure we recover and prepare for the game on Saturday.

“Hopefully we can turn out a performance similar to the one this evening against MK Dons on Saturday."
