Lapses In Concentration Frustrate Manager

23 October 2016

Manager Stephen Robinson was frustrated to concede from two set plays yesterday as his side fell to a 0-2 defeat against Bristol Rovers.

Two goals from two corners lost the game for Latics, who dominated for large parts of the second half.

Speaking after the game, he said: "It was a frustrating afternoon. We put a lot of balls into the box and we said on Tuesday night that goals change games and we have conceded from two set plays again which absolutely kills me.

"I thought three or four players looked tired and that concerns me. There are certain players that we thought might struggle to recover from Tuesday to Saturday and I take the blame for that, maybe I should have changed the team but when you beat the league leaders it is difficult to do that.

“I thought three or four players looked leggy, but I still thought there were some performances and chances to get something out of the game but we didn’t quite take them.”

One positive introduction in the second half was winger Ryan McLaughlin who impressed. “I thought Ryan McLaughlin’s performance was positive,” the manager commented.

“He was injured, got into the team but had a little setback but he showed today what he is about. He must have put six or seven quality crosses into the box but people have got to have the desire to get in there and score goals.

"If you are not willing to get in there and take the hits then you are not going to score. The reality is we shouldn’t have been chasing the game. We were in control of the game and a set play put us one down.”

Latics travel to local rivals Rochdale next weekend and the manager knows the importance of putting a run together, starting there.

“I thought the crowd were good today and they got behind the boys,” he said. “I’m sure we will take a decent crowd to Rochdale and we are determined to put it right and put a run together.

“The players in general have put in a decent performance today but we have had two lapses in concentration and that has lost us the game."
