Manager Heaps Praise On Players Following Win

15 February 2017

Manager John Sheridan was again full of praise for his players following the 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic last night.

Latics recorded back to back wins for the first time this season and the gaffer could not fault the effort of his players to get the win.

He said: “We were playing against a good team but I can only praise my players really.

"They are going out and doing everything required to get us out of the position we find ourselves in.

“If anyone knows me, I want us to pass, move, play from the back, but I just don’t think it’s the right time to do that.

"I think the players understand that and they are doing everything I’m asking to get us out of the league. I tell you what, we are hard to play against.

“We don’t half put a shift in, even the substitutions, they all know what we are trying to do and if we score first, we are not a bad team who wants to keep a clean sheet and fight for everything.

“They put us under a lot of pressure and Connor has had to make one or two saves but we’ve had some good chance as well.

“I’m chuffed to bits the way we went about the game and three points is what we are after, and we got it.”

The manager made three changes to his side which beat Coventry City at the weekend. “I’ve got a strong bench and I’m comfortable playing 18/19 players in the team,” Sheridan admitted.

“It’s a good sign and I need to keep them on their toes and sharp because as I showed again tonight, I’m not afraid to put players in the team.

“I will probably do the same on Saturday so I want them all thinking they’ve got a chance of playing because there are one or two who are working their socks off but a bit of freshness is no harm at all.

“Whatever decisions I make is for the benefits of Oldham Athletic."

Latics moved on to 34 points and secured their fifth win in eight games under the manager but he is not worried about the teams around him.

“I’m only bothered about us picking three points up,” he said.

“We all have an idea what the points tally is going to be but we have just got to try and keep winning as quick as we can.

“If we can gain an advantage on teams in and around us then so be it.”
