MATCH REPORT: Determined Latics Beaten By Huddersfield Town

16 July 2016

A determined Oldham Athletic were defeated 0-2 in their opening pre-season game.

Harry Bunn netted the opening goal on 72 minutes, guiding the ball past Chris Kettings from inside the box before another well worked move from the visitors saw Jack Payne head home to round off a 2-0 victory in the final minute of the game.

A new management team and a load of new faces in the squad, so Latics could be forgiven for making mistakes, however they performed admirably throughout the game.

Whilst Huddersfield Town dominated early possession, it was a positive start from Latics in terms of tackling, intercepting and keeping their well balanced shape.

Robinson opted for a 3-5-2 formation with Josh Law and Jamie Reckord acting as wing backs, getting forward with every opportunity.

The first chance of the game fell to Huddersfield Town on 10 minutes as goalkeeper Connor Ripley miskicked into the path of Kyle Dempsey who fed Rekell Pyke but Ripley atoned for his error by diving on the loose ball.

Athletic midfielder Marc Klok buzzed around in midfield, putting in challenges and intercepting the ball well, whilst Ryan Flynn’s quality was there for all to see.

First year professional Jamie Stott was tested on 14 minutes as Pyke had a sniff of goal at the back post but the defender got down well to win the ball and force the ball to safety.

Attacking wise, striker Billy Mckay was a threat throughout the half, chasing down defenders and loose balls. Flynn’s free kick on 17 minutes found the Wigan Athletic loanee but he could not find the right touch as the ball ran away from him.

Midway through the half, Latics won themselves a free kick in a good area. Full back Josh Law curled towards the top corner but former Athletic stopper Joel Coleman tipped over the crossbar.

Dempsey, Aaron Mooy and Joe Lolley had shots towards the end of the half which failed to test Athletic goalkeeper Ripley.

Latics made three changes at the break, and one of those, Lee Croft, was straight into the action forcing a good save from Coleman.

The midfielder received the ball from Mckay, cut inside one man and struck towards the far post but Coleman managed to hold on to the ball.

From one end to the other as fellow substitute Chris Kettings made an instant impression with the Oldham Athletic supporters, making two fantastic saves.

Firstly he palmed a strong Phil Billings drive wide of the post and from the resulting corner, he managed to scoop the ball over the bar, despite the ball looking to be heading into the back of the net.

A host of changes on 60 minutes halted the game for a minute as Jake Cassidy, Luke Woodland and Kallum Mantack entered the field of play for Latics, whilst visitors Huddersfield Town made eight changes.

Croft was causing the Huddersfield Town defence a lot of problems with his experienced and intelligent play.

He released Mantack down the left who won a corner for Latics whilst he used all his experience to take him past Chris Schindler and deliver a sumptuous ball into the box which was just cleared.

On 72 minutes came the opening goal of the game as Huddersfield Town took the lead.

A low cross into the box by Jordan Williams found the onrushing Bunn who guided the ball past Kettings to put the Terriers a goal ahead.

Latics battled in a bid to get a goal out of the game but were met by a resolute Huddersfield Town defence.

As the game looked to be petering out, Huddersfield managed to grab a second through Payne as he headed past Kettings to seal a 2-0 victory.

All in all, it was a good work out for Robinson’s players in the opening pre-season game of the season with plenty of positives to take from the game.
