Manager Stephen Robinson has hinted at rotating his squad tomorrow night against Preston North End in the EFL Cup second round tie.
It’s been a busy start to the season as Latics have played five games in 14 days.
Tomorrow’s game will be their sixth in 17 days and the manager admitted he may need to rest a couple of players in order to keep the squad fresh.
He said: “We don’t have the luxury of Manchester United or Liverpool where we just throw another starting 11 out, that’s not the case, but we will look to make a couple of changes.
"Some will be forced and some unforced but I still think we will go there with a very strong team.
“Preston had a super result on Saturday after a slow start but we played them in pre-season so we are well aware of what they are.
“They are a good team and I have a lot of admiration for the coaching staff and Simon Grayson so it will be a tough game for us.”
With games comes a heavy cost to supporters, and the manager was quick to praise the fans who have invested in his team this season.
"First and foremost we will put in a good performance. We’re well aware of the amount of games there has been in the month of August and people forget the cost to fans,” Robinson admitted.
"There is a lot of cost if you bring a young family to games and that’s what they’ve done. They come and supported us and they have been fantastic.
“A special mention to the fans who turned up on Saturday from Oldham.
“We’ll be going to Preston and giving 100% because we know that people who turn up pay a lot of money to see it and all they want to see is 100% effort on the field.”
Whilst Saturday brought the first league win of the season, the manager is keen to keep everyone grounded ahead of tomorrow night’s game.
“Winning on Saturday will not dictate what we do in the season, and winning against Wigan Athletic in the cup doesn’t mean we’re going to win it but we are four matches unbeaten now and we are hard to beat,” he said.
“We haven’t conceded a goal in three games now so we have a solid base and solid foundation so we’ve got a chance.
“When the goals start coming then we will be a bigger threat but we are creating a lot of chances, getting in areas of the pitch where we are playing decent football and we are happy with things at the moment.
"We are well aware that the win on Saturday is not the finished article and we have a long way to go.”
