Robinson: “I Can Only Apologise To The Fans.”

6 December 2016

Manager Stephen Robinson had some strong words after yesterday’s 3-2 defeat against Lincoln City which saw his side exit the Emirates FA Cup at the second round stage.

Speaking to the Latics PlayerHD after the game, Robinson said: “The first 50/60 minutes was embarrassing.

"I can only apologise to the fans who turned up tonight and those who watched on television.

“They are a big physical side, they launch balls into the box, Rhead is a big handful, we work all week to deal with it but we didn’t perform.

“Eight or nine players got beat up if we are completely honest but ultimately I take the blame on that.

“I gave people opportunities tonight that were not up to playing at this level and changes will be made.

"I can only apologise for that performance. I’m embarrassed to be honest and it was hard to watch. Someone asked me if I wanted a copy of that game, no thanks.

"It was bad enough for the first time. It was too little too late in the end. We could have got ourselves out of it and produced a Houdini act and ultimately we didn’t deserve to.”

The manager handed out praise to his skipper, but had stern words for the rest of his players.

“If we had 11 Peter Clarke’s on the pitch then we will be top of the league,” he commented.

“I can’t ask for anymore from him but there are a lot of players in the dressing room who need to have a long hard look at themselves.

“There will be none of them knocking on my door this week, I can assure you of that.

"I need people in my team who I can trust. Tonight I gave people opportunities who are good football players but they proved that otherwise.”

Latics did pull two late goals back through Clarke and Billy Mckay and could have equalised late on.

Robinson said: “Cameron Burgess had a good chance and Freddie Ladapo had a chance but we didn’t take them. It was too little, too late.

"It was a good last 30 minutes but that’s not good enough. It’s not good enough to come to a Conference side and not expect a battle.”
