The SportsDirect.com Park pitch has had a makeover this summer and Grounds Manager Lee Williams gives fans an update as to the work done to it over the summer.
After an independent report was commissioned, it highlighted a number of issues with the SportsDirect.com Park pitch last season.
Grounds manager Lee Williams consulted with Dan Duffy, who is the international pitch consultant for Desso Sports Systems, to assess a number of options for the playing surface going forwards.
After assessing the options, Williams decided to bring in a company called Precision Microbes who specialise in biological renovations and soil health to improve the playability of the playing surface.
Precision Microbes are at the forefront of the biotech industry and biological pitch renovations.
They came in and did their own evaluation of the surface and put in place a programme which was implemented and still ongoing.
To date, this programme has improved the depth and density of the roots and strength of the grass, combined with reducing the organic matter in the profile which has resulted in a freer draining surface.
Williams said: “In direct comparison to last year, I have definitely seen a massive improvement in root development, root length and overall condition of the pitch.
“Last year we did a mechanical renovation and comparing it to this year’s biological renovation, we are in a much better position this season to see us through the winter months.
“I would like to thank Precision Microbes for their professionalism and continued support.”
John Paul Ennis from Precision Microbes said: “To turn the pitch around was an extreme challenge but we are very happy with the progress so far.”
