Philliskirk Praises Youth Team Spirit As They Make It 10 League Wins In A Row

6 March 2017

Oldham Athletic’s Youth Team came from behind to beat Bradford on Saturday, making it 10 straight league wins in a row.

The young Bantams took the lead early on before Mason Fawns equalised with a strike on the edge of the 18 yard box.

Shortly before half time, Latics completed the comeback when Dylan King capitalised on a goalkeeping error to bundle the ball home.

At half time, manager Tony Philliskirk made a tactical change and brought on Ryan Scholes to bolster the midfield.

In the second half, more chances came Latics' way which they couldn’t capitalise on. However, Dylan King headed home a Mason Fawns corner to make it 3-1 and cemented their place at the top of the league.

Philiskirk was forced to make changes for the game with seven of the regular starting 11 unavailable. He praised the players who stepped up: “I’ve got to give a lot of credit to the players who came in, we went with five school boys as well and they acquitted themselves very highly in a good way. At the end of the game we had four 15 year olds on the pitch so it was great.

“All through the game Bradford had the most possession but we always looked threatening on the break and we countered well.”

The manager also praised the mentality of the team to go to the top of the EFL Youth Alliance North East: “Whatever level you’re at to win 10 games in a row, particularly youth football is exceptional. We’ve gone from third or 4th bottom to top of the league.

“Everything we’ve been working on and asking them to buy into they’ve done in abundance. The lads have got the bit between their teeth at the moment.

“We’ve always been the chaser and we’re now at the top and are there to be shot at. Everybody wants to beat Oldham Athletic.”

The next game for Oldham Athletic’s Youth Team is against Lincoln City U18s this Friday, 10th March at 11am on Chapel Road.
