Young Latics Bow Out Of Cup Competition

29 November 2016

Oldham Athletic were knocked out of the Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup after losing 1-3 to local rivals Bury.

All started well for Athletic as Brad Kay gave Tony Philliskirk’s side the lead on 15 minutes but three goals from the visitors turned the game on its head and Bury advance through to the semi-finals.

Latics started the game well as Rory Middleton was the first to go close for Athletic on 10 minutes but his shot was well saved by the Bury goalkeeper.

Five minutes later and Latics took the lead as Kay stabbed home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

That lead would only last five minutes as Bury capitalised on a mistake in the Latics defence and Nathan Thomas equalised for Bury.

Just after the half hour mark, Bury took the lead as Tsun Dai’s shot found its way past Callum O’Neill from 25 yards.

Not long after the half time break, the game was stopped for over 15 minutes after an injury to the Bury goalkeeper.

Thomas, scorer of the first goal, went between the sticks and did well to deny substitute Bailey Whalley from close range.

Bury did extend their lead on 77 minutes as Joe Adams volleyed home from close range as Bury ran out 1-3 winners.

Philliskirk’s men huffed and puffed but were met by a stubborn Bury defence as they bowed out of the competition at the quarter final stage.

Oldham Athletic: O’Neill, Hamer, Arthur, Lent, Fallon, Brown (Whalley), Middleton, Uche, Sheridan, Dry (Fawns), Kay.
