Youth Team Draw 1-1 With Chesterfield

10 October 2016

The Oldham Athletic youth team drew 1-1 with Chesterfield on Saturday.

Tony Philliskirk’s men took the lead just after half time as Ryan Leonard smashed Latics into the lead but the Spireites equalised just after the hour mark to seal a point.

Speaking about the game, Philliskirk said: “There was a lot of good football played by both teams and at the end of the game both coaches could come away thinking it was a game we could and probably should have won.

"It was an end-to-end game, very open and we created a lot of chances. We had a few players out due to injury and international duty so it allowed us to play some of the under 16s which was great.

“We were a bit fragile which is to be expected if you play against older players.

"We started the game well and could have been a couple up in the first 15 minutes but as the game went on Chesterfield countered and maybe should have scored a couple of goals.

“On chances it was probably a fair result, but it could easily have been 4-4.

“With the number of young players we had on it was a decent result, decent performance but frustrating we didn’t get the three points.”

The youth team manager singled out praise for the goalscorer: “Ryan Leonard was excellent all game and scored a great goal,” he commented.

“With it being a younger team it was important the second years helped the younger players.

“Ryan does it week in week out through his work rate, his endeavour and his attitude and he’s eye catching because of that.

"He is a fine example to the rest of the players and this season he has had some good performances. We are all really pleased for him because he has deserved it.”
