Youth Team Go Top After Weekend Win

20 February 2017

Oldham Athletic youth team have moved to the top of the Youth Alliance North East section after a 0-1 win against Grimsby Town at the weekend.

Brad Kay scored the only goal of the game in the first half to move Athletic above Mansfield Town into top spot.

The result also extended the youth team's winning run to 10 games.

Speaking about game, Tony Philliskirk said: "The boys have gone top of the league with a game in hand so it's fantastic. It's a great achievement to say we were fourth from bottom three months ago.

"We had a long trip to Grimsby on Saturday and when we turned up, the youth team manager at Grimsby apologised for the state of the pitch. It had no grass on it and it was very narrow so it was difficult.

"The game wasn't a spectacle but the pitch won. We did speak about the need to win games differently, there wasn't a lot of chances and Grimsby defended for a lot of it.

"One bit of quality has won the game for us in the end but that was the highlight of the game. We are just glad to get the game out of the way. We ground out the three points and it was a smashing win.

"We are there to be shot at now. It always gives teams a spring in their step when they are playing top of the league so it's going to be a tough end to the season.

"We are in a good place at the moment and will give anyone a good game. We have put ourselves in a great position with eight games to go. If we keep winning our games then nobody will catch us, but that sounds a lot easier than it's going to be."
