Holden: "I Need To Lift The Players."

1 March 2015

Temporary boss Dean Holden admits he needs to lift the players after the 4-0 home defeat to Preston North End.

Two goals in either half was enough to conceal Latics to a heavy home defeat and Holden summed up his thoughts after the game.

He said: "It was very disappointing. The facts are you can't concede the goals we did and expect to even draw a game, never mind win. We set up in a shape that was available to us. I thought we were in the game in the first half.

"Our shape was good. We were picking up most of the second balls but we couldn't create anything at the other end. We had one or two shots which was disappointing.

"You have to pick yourself up. Do you lie down and die? No. You come in tomorrow with a smile on your face and you look in your own mirror and think did I do enough?

"I hate losing games like everyone does. Of course there is disappointment. Where did it go wrong? Why did it go wrong? How do we fix it for Tuesday? It's a massive game Tuesday night and I need to lift the players. If we go into the game with this mentality then we will get battered there."

Holden was missing seven of his first-team players and named two youth prospects on his bench but he is hoping a couple of injuries will clear up for Tuesday.

"Forte is looking more likely to be available and we have a chance with Conor [Wilkinson] but there is a huge risk of re-injury so we will have to see. Brian was ill so had to go off at half time," commented the 35-year-old.

"Winchester has got a tight muscle so he was ruled out. You go with what you have got and you give it your best shot."
