First team boss Dean Holden believed yesterday's goalless draw was a fair result on the balance of play.
Against one of his former sides, Connor Brown and Rhys Murphy had Latics' best chances of the game but they unfortunately couldn't break the deadlock.
Joel Coleman pulled off a string of wonderful saves to deny Chesterfield a winner but Holden believed it was a good point.
"You have got to look at what you are against. Chesterfield have done really well this season having come up from League Two last season. To mount a promotion push has been fantastic for them and aside from Bristol City, like I said, there isn't a lot in the division. It's just about putting the right performance in on the day and the clean sheet for us is really good.
"You can see out on the pitch that the lads are giving everything. Chesterfield brought on a big target man early in the game because they decided to go a little bit longer. Maybe the conditions wasn't as conducive to passing football."
Since taking over in February, Holden has not been afraid to play first year professionals and youth team players. "It's been in my thoughts since I took the job and I think you've seen that out on the pitch," he admitted.
"It's the ones that deserve to be out there that play. Whether they are first year pros or whether they are coming to the end of their careers, it's about showing the commitment in training, not just the day before a game.
"That comes with your behaviour around the place and how you commit yourself in terms of your application in training on Monday, Tuesday and throughout the week. They will be the ones that get the game time."
One of those first year pros, Jordan Bove, was given 15 minutes to showcase his skills and he impressed, according to Holden.
"Jordan Bove came on and he was a spark and we know what he's all about," he said. "I would have hated to play against him because he uses his pace a lot. Some good things come out of the game today."
