Holden Left Frustrated By Coventry's Equaliser

15 April 2015

First team boss Dean Holden was left frustrated by the match officials after Coventry City scored a controversial equaliser in additional time to earn a point.

Danny Philliskirk had given Latics the lead on 13 minutes through a superb back-heeled finish but with only minutes of the game remaining, Coventry equalised.

Connor Brown seemed to be pushed in the back by Frank Nouble, who crossed onto the head of Reda Johnson to power home the equaliser.

Speaking about the incident, Holden said: "It's a blatant foul, of course it is. He has had to get through Brownie to get to the ball and he's sent him flying but as I keep saying, referees and linesmen do get things wrong sometimes.

"Unfortunately for us, that is another one that has gone against us in the space of four days and it is tough to take. They don't make decisions like that on purpose, I think they just get them wrong."

Although the Sky Blues enjoyed the more possession in the second half, they did not trouble Joel Coleman, who was found to be in inspired form.

"Joel had a great game. Everything that was thrown at him, he made a save. He's growing in presence and of course he needs to improve in certain places but he has got the mentality to cope with the pressure," Holden commented.

"Coventry move the ball so well and make the pitch really big and it is difficult to contain them. We changed it around a couple of times to stem the flow but equally I don't think affected Joel too much in the second half for all the play that they had.

"We knew they would go a bit longer as the game went on, and they did. We defended absolutely everything except the one at the end and that was probably the first header we lost in the box all night."

Philliskirk made it six goals for the season and the 35-year-old praised his players for a wonderfully worked team goal.

"The lads are creative players, especially the midfield lads and they like to get hold of the ball and make things happen. They did things quick and caught Coventry off guard and it worked to perfection," admitted Holden.

"It was a great finish from Danny and at that point in the game we were thinking we were in control."
