Johnson: "We Gave It A Real Go."

25 January 2015

Manager Lee Johnson could not fault his players despite losing a 3-2 loss against Gillingham yesterday.

After Latics found themselves 2-0 down after 14 minutes, ten minutes later, the scores were level. Liam Kelly followed up Danny Philliskirk's penalty miss to pull one back and Dominic Poleon equalised after a superb solo effort.

Bradley Dack, who the manager singled out before the game as the player to watch, volleyed the winning goal in the second half and Johnson summed up his thoughts after the game.

He said: "I'm disappointed to have lost the game. I thought we gave it a real go though so I'm proud of the players for that and we just let ourselves down through a lot of things.

"We didn't have enough quality for all our dominance in the final third and then the individual errors start. If you give someone a two goal lead it's difficult to get a hold of the game but in fairness we got back into it through good play and some good shutting down by Dom.

"Then we look the favourites to win it and we looked the stronger side. Amari had a good chance cleared off the line and it was one of those days and the ball didn't just drop for us.

"Overall I thought we were the better side for most parts of the game and it was just one of those games where the goals made the difference."

The 33-year-old reserved praise for new loan signing Jacob Mellis after the 24-year-old impressed in his first game. "When Jacob Mellis came on I thought he was excellent," Johnson said.

"He got on the ball, had loads of touches, created and knew where his space was so I was pleased with that. I want to try and get a couple in before the end of the window and then we will be stronger coming out of it."
