Johnson: "We Came Up Against A Very Good Side Today."

21 December 2014

Manager Lee Johnson was understandably downbeat after yesterday's performance and feels it is time to get back to basics to turn around the club's form.

Latics were smashed for seven against MK Dons yesterday but still remain in the top 10, one point outside the play off positions.

Speaking after the game, a dejected Johnson said: "We've got to go back to what we are about now. We have got to get players and play players who are not going to capitulate like they did. I'm going to have to take it on the chin personally and I'm very disappointed and apologetic to everybody.

"We came up against a very good side today who have exposed us and our flaws in personality at the moment which is the biggest disappointment. I never thought one of my sides would be beaten 4-0 let alone seven.

"I knew it would be difficult to come here and get a performance after a poor performance last week. I tried to pick a team that would be dangerous on the counter attack and it didn't work out like that for a number of reasons.

"I just want players to get back to the kid in them. I want them to ask themselves why we play football. We play football because we enjoy ourselves. We have worked very hard in our lives to get into this career. These boys are the 0.0001% of the population who play football and they are here for a reason.

"They are here to play for a fantastic club who have been in the doldrums for quite a while now and we still believe after a game like that we can get things right."

With 11 goals conceded and none scored in their last two games, the boss needs support from all areas to get the player's confidence back.

"I'm the manager and of course I have to apologise but I also have to close ranks now and bring in anybody that will help us in our plight to get the players confidence back," admitted the gaffer.

"We are going to need everybody even if we go 1-0 down. If somebody kicks it out of play or someone falls over their own feet then we stick by them because that happens when you are a footballer. We do all the tactical stuff but today there were some stuff going on that were comical, almost schoolboy.

"We have to, as a club, try and rally around the players because they are the only ones that can put it right on the first team pitch. They haven't become bad players overnight but they have drastically lost their confidence overnight.

"I haven't lost any confidence in myself or my club or indeed in my team in the long term but I now, as a young manager, have got my biggest challenge and I hope people stick with us enough to say, this has been a horrendous seven days and players are low in confidence but we are Oldham Athletic, we have been through bad times before, we can come through a bad time very quickly with the right attitude."

Asked about the reaction of the dressing room after the game, the 33-year-old responded: "I went in there and I asked the question because I needed people to say things personally to me and for them to get it off there chest.

"If there was anything that needed to be said, then they could and I could come back with an honest answer. I gave my opinion which was calm and composed because I had time to plan what I was going to say afterwards.

"Sometimes you can be aggressive and slander and get into people but we all know on a day like today, it was never going to be the case. We need to rebuild our club from the top down.

"Everybody in the club are going to be upset with that, what with going into work miserable and our fans were fantastic today. It brought a tear to my eye with the reaction that we got. It hurts but I've been in football a long time and I will do anything to make it right."
