Johnson: "We Were Excellent."

1 February 2015

Manager Lee Johnson praised his team after comfortably beating Notts County to rise into the top ten in Sky Bet League One.

George Elokobi headed home his third goal of the season on his 29th birthday to give Latics the lead. Only a minute later, Amari Morgan-Smith doubled the advantage but had to be substituted just before the break.

Jonathan Forte took his place and sealed the game in the second half with a header after great build up play and the manager spoke highly of his team's performance.

He said: "I was really pleased with that one and we were excellent. The boys were solid, didn't have too many scary moments but we had some good chances.

"We could have had a penalty in the first half and Dom has had another couple of chances to put it to bed but I thought he third goal was absolutely superb. I haven't seen it back yet but in my mind it was excellent and I'm looking forward to watching that back.

"I think it was a tough game because of the conditions. The pitch was a bit dead after having the covers on for three or four days. A big shout out to the volunteers for helping to get the game on because that was important as we needed the game. We were nice and solid, nice and tight and the midfield dominated.

"There are some very positive signs. We've moved up the table as well and that's nice to see and what we wanted to do."

Goalkeeper Jake Kean made his debut for the club and was voted the Optima Cars man of the match. "I thought he was absolutely outstanding," admitted the gaffer.

"He come to claim three or four balls, punched at the right time, caught at the right time and everything he did was safe."

Morgan-Smith, who notched his second goal for the club, was replaced on 42 minutes after suffering an injury and Johnson gave an update on his striker.

"Hopefully Amari's injury will be okay for Tuesday," said the 33-year-old. "We will have to assess it in the next 48 hours but he did tweak his hamstring a little bit so we'll have to see how it is."
