Jones: "The Lads Are Itching."

30 January 2015

Latics midfielder Mike Jones believes the spirit in the camp is as strong as ever as they look to get back to winning ways against Notts County on Saturday.

The midfielder, who has four goals this season, all of which outside the box, admitted last week's defeat will spur the players on to get three points at the weekend.

He said: "It was a bit of a blow at Gillingham but it has made us more hungry again and the lads are just itching for Notts County to come and to beat someone really well and kick on.

"Nobody wants to be 14th. If you are happy with 14th then you are in the wrong game. We want to be up there, in the top half and kick on.

"Play-offs is what we have always wanted and we've seen what is out in the league. There hasn't been much between us and other teams. We have dominated games but now it is time to do that and take the points.

"We've got to put last week's result behind us now and move on to Saturday against Notts County and they are a team we need to beat."

The Magpies visit SportsDirect.com Park just a point ahead of Latics and Jones highlighted the impact a consistent run could have on the side.

"I thought we dominated them earlier in the season and that was another game we came away and thought how we didn't win the game," commented the 27-year-old. "We will look to get right at them on Saturday and get back to winning ways.

"If we are not careful, the chance slips away but we need to start winning back-to-back games and go on a little run. Hopefully that can start on Saturday.

"We are not going away but we are also not closing the gap. We are just below mid table and that's how it has been because we have been inconsistent. Back-to-back wins is exactly what we need because that takes you up the league. We need to start putting a string of them together now because before you know it, it might be too late.

"With the Tuesday games coming up, we have three in a week and if you get six, seven or nine points out of them then all of a sudden you are safely in the play offs. There are a lot of games coming up so we will be looking for maximum points."
