Jones: "We Believe That We Can Go Even Higher."

12 December 2014

Latics midfielder Mike Jones feels the side can kick on from their early season good form and mount a challenge for the automatic places come the end of the season.

The former Crawley Town midfielder has pitched in with three important goals this season, scoring the winning goal against Walsall and Leyton Orient.

With the club currently occupying the final play-off position, the 27-year-old believes Latics have the capability to challenge even further up the division.

He said: "I wouldn't have signed here if I didn't think we would be up there. We are doing well and we could be better off really.

"If you look at the early games, Notts County, Gillingham, we could be better off. There hasn't been many games were we nicked something out the game and didn't deserve to.

"We are where we are and the table doesn't lie. We can definitely stay there but it is tough now because of the Christmas period.

"If we come through Christmas and January still up there then we have a right good chance but we still have to play all the top teams at home. We are in there, enjoying it but we have to work hard to stay there.

"We want to win every game we go into. There is a good belief around the squad at the moment. We have good players, good spirit, the camp is good, we have a laugh around the place and come the weekend we knuckle down.

"We believe that we can go even higher and we have to push on now over Christmas. There are a lot of points up for grabs and hopefully we will get there as many as we can."

Jones has now fully recovered from the bug which saw him miss last weekend's FA Cup second round defeat to Doncaster Rovers and is fully focused on getting a result for the manager tomorrow.

"The gaffer was disappointed with last Saturday but it goes without saying how important this weekend is for him and it is important to us as well," commented Jones.

"It is a home game and it has that added spice because of the gaffer but we'll make sure to sort him out on Saturday."

The midfielder praised recent loan signing Daniel Johnson and he welcomes the competition for places in the team.

"You want competition for places because that drives you on and makes you work even harder to keep your place," said the 27-year-old.

"You want good players to come and improve the team and Daniel Johnson has been a great signing. You can see how much quality he has got and he has added the goals. The more good players we bring in, the better.
