Kelly Disappointed Not To Take Three Points

30 August 2015

Manager Darren Kelly was disappointed not to come away with the three points after his side created chance after chance but could only draw with neighbours Bury.

Lee Croft fired Latics into the lead on 24 minutes with his first goal for the club since December 2004, but they were pegged back in the second half through a Tom Pope strike.

However, Latics created chances throughout the game, notably James Wilson firing wide on the break just before the equaliser, and the gaffer wanted to take the positives from the game.

He said: "We done a bit of work this week on creating chances and we did that. On any other day they would have been in the back of the net but it showed good productivity in the final third but we didn’t put them away.

"We created the chances in that final third and that is a positive because I don’t feel like we’ve done that over the past couple of games but today we were. Hopefully we can build on that going into the next games.

“Jones, Simonas, Croft and Forte all had chances to score but we have to take the positives out of the game and look forward to Tuesday.”

Although the unbeaten league run remains intact, stretching to five games, the manager believes his side should have more points on the board.

“We are still unbeaten but if I’m honest I would want more wins,” he admitted. “I think we’ve deserved more wins in terms of today and other games but we’ll build on that.”

Just under 2,000 Latics supporters were in the away section of the stadium, something which blew the gaffer away.

“You saw them in voice, they stood behind the goals and clapped the players because they saw the effort the lads put in, and again, it was immense,” he said.

“I don’t know if they know the importance of being vocal and getting behind the team but today they were rapturous again and long may that continue.

“A big thank you to them all from myself, all the staff and the players because they are a credit to this club.”
