Youth Team Draw In Controversial Encounter

23 February 2015

A controversial late Carlisle United penalty denied Latics' youth team victory on Saturday as they drew 1-1.

With five minutes of the second half remaining, Latics took the lead through Callum Scullion.

Jack Tuohy's corner caused havoc inside the Carlisle box and Scullion stabbed the ball over the line to give the youngsters the lead.

However, deep into additional time, Kallum Mantak was adjudged to have fouled a Carlisle striker in the area and the Cumbrians had a chance to level.

The striker stepped up but Latics goalkeeper Paul Tyson pulled off a superb save to deny him.

Controversy hit, though, as the referee ordered a retake as he believed Tyson strayed off his line during the initial penalty.

The same player stepped up and put the ball beyond the young goalkeeper to salvage a point for the Cumbrians.

Youth team boss, Tony Philliskirk, said: "It was a long trip, played in windy conditions and if I'm honest it was a poor game. It was a scrappy game but we were the better team.

"We played against the wind in the second half and there was not a lot of quality in the game from both teams. We thought it was going to peter out into a draw but the last five minutes produced a bit of drama.

"The players were very aggrieved at the penalty decision. Tyson pulled off an absolutely fantastic save and it goes behind for a corner but the referee made them take it again. Straight after they scored, the final whistle sounded so the lads were very animated and frustrated after the game.

"All in all, it was difficult conditions but it was a poor game. We are better than that but we nearly snuck a win. I thought we were slightly the better team but if you analysed the whole game, you would say that a draw was probably a fair result."
