Youth Team Draw With League's Top Side

2 March 2015

Oldham Athletic youth team, sponsored by The Safeguard Group, drew 0-0 with top-of-the-league Wigan Athletic on Saturday taking their unbeaten run to three games.

With Tony Philliskirk missing two key players through first-team commitments, his side came out with a respectable draw with the division's best side.

Philliskirk said: "It is very unusual to have a 0-0 draw in youth team football but I think that tells the story. We were two evenly matched teams and they are top of the league for a reason so it was always going to be tough. They are strong, organised, play good football and a very good team.

"We more than matched them in the first half and thought we probably had the better chances but we didn't make the goalkeeper work as much. We stood resolutely at the back and could have nicked a goal but it wasn't to be in the first half.

"We started the second half quite well and had a few half chances but then Wigan grew into the game and really put us on the back foot. We had to defend manfully towards the end of the game and we came away with a respectable point against the league's top side.

"A draw was probably a fair result but both sides will think that they could have won the game. There were a lot of positives from the game. We defended well from the front and I thought Callum Etches was outstanding at the back.

"Danny Byrnes had his first 90 minutes of the season which was great for us. The poor lad hasn't played much due to a succession of injuries so it was great to have him back on the field.

"Overall I'm really pleased because Wigan are a really good team at youth team level. They are top for a reason and we have taken four points from them this season so credit has to go to the lads for that."
