Youth Team Triumphant

18 February 2015

Oldham Athletic's youth team recorded their fourth successive away victory yesterday, defeated Burnley 4-1 at Carrington.

After falling a goal behind, Rio Murray smashed a brace to put the youngsters ahead at the half time break.

Lee Knight extended Latics' lead in the second half and second-year scholar Danny Byrnes capped off the scoring as the youngsters ran out convincing winners.

Youth team boss Tony Philliskirk was delighted with his side's performance and said: "We had a much more inexperienced team out mostly full of first years and they had much fresher legs which is what we needed. I freshened it up and it gave us more energy than what we had on Saturday.

"A 4-1 victory against any Burnley side is a great result. We started the game really well but we went one down against the run of play. The players showed great resolve and determination to get back into it and we played our game.

"We broke from midfield and the front two were real handfuls. We looked threatening throughout the game and deserved to get the victory.

"It was great to get Danny Byrnes back out on the field for the final half an hour of the game because he's been out for a long time. He looked lively when he came off and rounded off a good performance with a great goal towards the end of the game.

"It was a good strong performance and as we rested a lot of the players, it gives us a lot of options going forward. We have a hectic schedule going into the end of the season so we'll need everyone for the run in."
