Manager Dave Penney admits goalscorers are tough to find - but he's confident he's secured a gem in Pawel Abbott.

The ex-Huddersfield striker worked with the new Boundary Park boss at Darlington last season and inked a two-year deal at the club this morning.

Abbott netted 17 times for the Quakers last season and currently boats a career total of 80 goals in 162 starts, plus 78 appearances as a substitute.

"I'm delighted to get this deal done as we have ourselves a proven goalscorer - Pawel's goal ratio is excellent," Penney told oldhamathletic.co.uk.

"I paid £100,000 to get him from Swansea when I was at Darlington; obviously we worked together there for a season so I know what he's all about and vice versa.

"I know for a fact that a lot of clubs were in for him and some of those were offering him better financial terms.

"But I think the package of playing in League One and working with me was right for Pav when he could have taken more money elsewhere."

Penney added: "He will be looking forward to the challenge of playing at this level again and goalscorers are hard to find whatever level you play at.

"He's only 27 so is in his prime and I'm confident the goals will flow if we can provide the service.

"We've signed a proven scorer on a free transfer at a time when those type of players tend to cost a premium in fees and wages."
