Dave Penney says new acquisition Dean Furman is ready for the challenge of a League One campaign with Athletic this season.

The Boundary Park chief says a loan spell at Bradford helped hone the midfielder's game last season after a successful spell in the reserves at Rangers.

And he can't wait to get started with the South African, who will be hoping to represent the host country at the forthcoming World Cup.

"You can't argue with Dean's pedigree - Chelsea and Rangers, while also being on the brink of breaking into the South Africa team," he said.

"He's a good age, got some good experience with Bradford and is ready to step up a level with us.

"I'm pleased we were able to agree a compensation figure with Rangers and we're well-stocked in central midfield now with Danny Whitaker, Jon Worthington, Rob Purdie and Dale Stephens."

Penney described Furman as a midfielder who is equally comfortable at either end of the field and "a great addition" to the squad.

That was borne out by the efforts of Bradford boss Stuart McCall, who was extremely keen to keep the player following his loan spell at Valley Parade.

"I know Bradford were very keen and that says something about Dean," continued Penney.  "But once we'd spoken to Dean I knew he'd come here.

"He did very well with Bradford and I'm confident he will continue his progress at the higher level."
