Manager John Sheridan says his side are in for a tough test at newly-relegated Colchester this weekend.

Latics travel to the Weston Homes Community Stadium for the first time to take on the U's, who are looking to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt.

Sheridan's men lie at the top of the league after racking up maximum points so far, while Geraint Williams' side have won one, drawn one and lost one of their three League One fixtures.

But the Latics chief knows his side will have to dig deep if they are to bounce back from defeat at Burnley with another win tomorrow.

"I don't want to get too dour because we've made a great start to the season and I'm very pleased with how the lads are battling alongside each other," he said.

"We'll go to Colchester confident we can get a result, but it'll be a tough game because they were a Championship side last season.

"They are one of my tips to do well this time around but we are going there to win the game, not just for a point.

"The players are in a confident frame of mind and there's a little bit of a buzz around at the moment.

"We've had a very good start but we're not getting too carried away.  Being top of the league means we're there to be shot at."

Sheridan could come face-to-face with old team-mate Scott Vernon tomorrow, and the ex-Latics man is a player the boss holds in the highest esteem.

"Scott's been in and out of the team there but he's a great lad who I've got a lot of time for," he said.

"He's probably got one of the best goal ratios in the league in terms of how many games he's played.

"Hopefully I know Scott's strengths and if he plays we'll have to deal with him."
